As some of you maybe aware, I'm a vegetarian and I haven't eaten meat for the past 10 years.
Today when I was browsing the internet I came across this amazing site called ‘Veggienumnum.’
As you will find (read) in the about section, the site is dedicated to vegetarianism and vegetarian food and recipes.

Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, you will love some of the recipes that this site has to offer.
So many people fail to understand that vegetarians have a delicious variety of foods on offer and that a meal can be complete without meat.

Today I was given another article from my dad, who continues to show his support by giving me inspirational articles to read.

The article reads the following;

'Too often the everyday stresses and struggles of life drag us away from the things that make life fun. These may be family travel, or the simple pleasure of gardening. In the fast-paced 24/7 world, it can take real discipline and commitment to make sure that we take the time out to do what we really enjoy.

Like with many other things in our lives, having fun can take some planning. First of all, we need to discover what it is that makes us tick - where our passions and pleasures lie. Once this is figured out, we need to think about what we'll need to achieve this.

1. Prioritize - We often spend too much effort on the things we think need to be done, but which could probably be done less frequently. Think about shifting your priorities so that things that make you happy are a priority and not an afterthought.

2. Take small steps - It may not be possible to get where you want to be straight away. Try to set smaller goals along the way to keep yourself motivated.

3. Be disciplined - Competing demands will inevitably make enjoying life difficult from time to time. Try to make sure that even when times are tough you still find the time to enjoy yourself, even just a little' - Source unknown.

What Is Aperture You Say?

Well I have had my SLR camera for just over a year and it is only now I have taken the time out to really learn what my camera is capable of.

For some time, I have only been using the auto settings to take photographs of my beads.
As the naive armature I am, I didn’t realise how important shutter speed and aperture were.

Just to clarify, shutter speed determines how sharp your photos will turn out.
Aperture defines the detail or the area you would prefer to focus on.
Large apertures (low f numbers) reduce the depth of felid blurring the background behind and in front of the object. Small aperture (high f numbers) can increase depth of field focusing on the picture in whole.
Both settings come together to create a better photo.

It seems large aperture (low f numbers) are better for my etsy store, to blur the background and show the detail of the beads I have on offer, whereas small aperture is perfect for portraits or landscapes to bring all that’s to be seen into focus.

I'm looking forward to photographing my latest bead order now!

My dad bought home a news paper article the other day with some positive words of wisdom which I thought I would share...

"I've come to realise that, without motivation, goals can remain pipe dreams.
You need to care about and really want a certain outcome, then pour your heart and soul into achieving it.

I've seen in others, and learnt myself, that the human body can endure more and perform better than we give it credit for. But it's not the body working alone. The body is just the nail being driven in; the mind is the hammer, the driving force that will push a person far beyond their own expectations and on to success.

I think what stops some people is that they fear the act instead of focusing on the outcome. Only occasionally does my mind let go and I catch myself thinking "what if?" But then I give myself a mental upper-cut.
Life is here to be lived. And with the right attitude and willingness to deal with the hurdles. it really can be bloody awesome!" - Source unknown.

♥ Czech It Out - New Beads In Store Now

New beads have found their way into my store, with more to come in the next couple of days!
My new supplier has given me (and you, I am sure) a whole new storm of ideas and inspiration.
Many beads which appear so natural looking, means you won’t need to take a long walk to have ideas running through your mind.

Also a portion of all beads I purchase from my supplier are dedicated to humanitarian relief and development in North America. Mothers truly do a remarkable job.

We all have our day jobs, although we are fortunate enough to have a break between shifts. But mothers... they take care of their children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Even at 25 years of age, I will never outgrow my mum!

♥ Have A Sweet Easter!

It has been a couple of weeks since I have found the time to make a new blog post. Time seems to be slipping away. I can't believe we are half way through April.

Since Easter is creeping up on us fast, I thought I would share a gorgeous Easter treat I have found browsing online.

Recipe
Banana cupcakes (makes 12 muffin size cakes)

♥ Ingredients
125g (4.5 ounces) butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon (1/6 ounces) vanilla extract
150g (5.2 ounces) caster sugar
2 eggs
225g (8 ounces) self-raising flour
2 large mashed ripe bananas

♥ Cooking instructions
Preheat oven to 160-180 deg C (325-350 deg F).
Line muffin tray with paper cases.
Beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer until the mixture turns a pale colour.
Beat in eggs, flour and vanilla extract.
Stir in the mashed banana and mix thoroughly.
Divide mixture among cases.
Bake for 25-30 minutes.
Place cakes on a wire rack to cool.

To decorate (for 12 muffin sized cupcakes)

♥ Ingredients
36 mini eggs
Chocolate butter frosting

♥ Instructions
Using a small palette knife spread a thin layer of frosting on the center of the cakes.
Fill piping bag with the chocolate frosting and pipe in a large swirl around the top edge of the cakes.
Place 3 mini eggs in the center.

I was thinking this morning, it’s not often you hear of musicians or celebrities sharing their times before they were successful (or in the eye of the public I should say). What did they had to give up when money didn’t always grow on trees?

So often I read Etsy success stories of how one business came about and what risk they implemented to make their dreams come true. I always find the peoples stories so inspiring and also a great motivation tool for myself.

So who has inspired me? When this thought came to me this morning, I instantly thought of one of my favourite bands, ‘One Republic.’

Once when reading there bio, I remember the lead singer stating that at the age of 21, he quit his day job at a Pottery Barn warehouse and sold his car so he could buy recording equipment. To me, I find that inspiring. And so many artist/celebrities forget where they came from. Their sacrifices which have defined who they are today.

So, I thought I would make a blog post on my thoughts about their bio. Not only are they a good band, but because they shared their early experiences it shows them on a more personal level, leaving only positive thoughts in my mind. Great for any business really to share their beginnings in their bio/profiles.

♥ When One Door Closes Another One Opens...

An online friend of mine has recently decided to close one of her online businesses. When reading her blog post, it really hit close to home.

I had my own jewellery business (JewelRee) for about 4 years before I decided that selling beads, maybe a more viable and profitable business.

I think for sometime I was in denial. I was also experiencing anxiety and maybe a small amount of depression. I knew I was competing in a saturated market and I also knew collecting beads was my first love.
The rule I had created in my head was, ‘You can’t sell beads if you no longer create jewellery.’
I no longer had the passion to create. The competitive nature this world has killed my love for making and selling jewellery.

It wasn’t until an online friend of mine; Jenna Appleton who gave me some friendly advice... that I realized I had to do what my heart wanted, not my head. She had said to me, ‘to really make an income in a saturated jewelry market, it wouldn’t hurt to sell beads too.’

Even though I had an opportunity to sell both, I soon realized my love for beads was much greater.
As they say, 'sometimes when one door closes another one opens.'

Although my jewellery business is not officially closed, I haven’t been selling either. But to this day I have never looked back. All my time and energy now goes into a new business which exists because of my knowledge and the learning experience I gained from my first.
I never gave up, I just decided to explore other options.

It just shows, you never know what opportunities arise when you believe in what your heart wants and not your head. You also make your own rules.

Don’t assume because you have decided to finish something, you have failed. Sometimes it is just the beginning...

♥ Stop Comparing Yourself

When you’re in business whether you’re young or old, it can be hard watching those around you investing in things that are not necessarily business related. Whether it is watching people building their new homes or buying new cars, you have to remember your business is also an investment.

Your business may not show people how financially well off you are (Because we all know we like to measure each other by our material belongings,) but your work is an achievement, a life-long journey that not everyone is lucky enough to experience. They may have different priorities, or they may just not have a passion.

If you want to have a business, you really have to have the right mind set and put aside what ‘everyone else’ is doing with their lives.

Your business is like a flower, it will only bloom if you feed and water it daily. You business may not be a house, or a car or even a new born child, but it is a success story to be proud of.

Don’t punish yourself because you may not have the materialistic things that others do. Everyone is at different stages of their lives and will live differently to you. The important thing is that you remember you are building something special from the ground up, earning your own money from something you have created with your own sweat and tears.

Don’t assume because people have it all, they are rich. Being rich is being happy and proud of your accomplishments. Not saying that those people who do have it all haven’t worked hard, but there is nothing like building something for yourself. That is true satisfaction.

Below is a little quote my mum shares with myself, when I have low self esteem or I question my capabilities.

'Don't equate your self-worth with how well you do things in life, or with what you own. You aren't what you do. If you are what you do, then when you don't, you aren't.'

♥ Something To Do...

It’s Sunday, so why not grab a cup of tea and make this amazingly easy little project.
Made from suede or leather you can adorn these cute little flowers onto any old or recycled pillow.

Tools and Materials
- Ultrasuede fabric
- Needle and thread
- Store-bought pillow

Instructions
1. Photocopy or print template, enlarging or reducing as desired. Using template, cut out 4 petals from fabric.
2. Knot end of thread; sew a running stitch through bottom of petals, making 2 stitches for each.
3. Gently pull thread to gather petals, and knot thread.
4. Make 1 more stitch to connect last and first petals to form flower, then knot and trim thread.
5. Repeat, making flowers in a variety of sizes. Tack-stitch flowers to pillow in the desired pattern.

Love A Little More

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a day for just couples.
I like to see the day as a time to reflect and take note of all the things I love and appreciate in my life. A little like Thanks Giving. I think it’s a positive way of looking at being single.

1. I love my family and friends. I also love how the internet allows me to make friends through Twitter and Facebook. Friends with the same interest and passion for an indie life.

2. I love my creative life. Without my beads and my passion for taking photos I can’t imagine being happy. I love that I am able to express myself through my bead site and now my blog.

3. I love my animals (I prefer to call them furr kids.) As high maintenance as they are, I love feeling needed and playing a mother like role in their lives.

♥ The Importance Of Taking Good Photographs

This year it’s my goal to change all my photographs. My past photos, to me felt a little too commercial, so I am going with a more crafty, natural look.
Since I have changed my photos, I have seen a huge increase in page views, treasuries and even sales.

In the previous business courses I have done, the instructors could never express enough how your photographs make or break a sale. Your photo, other than the item itself, is the image. You want to present your craft or supplies like you would see them in a magazine. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that your product, (in its near perfect photograph) shouldn’t have imperfections when received from your customers. You have to show your product next to how it is in real life.

Your photos are also your brand. Try to stray away with how other sellers maybe taking their photos. With my photos, I was inspired by how beads are so close to nature, therefore I am now taking photos of them on a somewhat natural background. It inspires jewelry artists to buy/create. You also have to make taking photos fun, otherwise you will soon loose inspiration and you won’t have the energy to create the photos you need to sell.

I hope I don’t give the impression as if I am a professional because I am far from it. I just wanted to share my thoughts/knowledge with methods that have been working for myself as of late.

♥ What Are Your Goals For 2011?

Fresh starts normally mean new beginnings or vice versa. So I thought for my first blog post for the new year, I would love to ask/hear what everyone's goals are for 2011.
To be honest, I achieved so much last year (not meaning to sound so front...) My bead businesses is slowly growing, I have a new casual job in a liquor store and well my health seems to be well and truly on the mend.

My only aim is to be organised.

Recently I went into a pet-shop to buy a fish and came out with an 8 week old Pomeranian puppy...

To cut a long story short, I called him Marley, after the movie 'Marley And Me.'

I had never seen the movie until tonight. The movie is really quite powerful, showing just how much pets are part of the family. It is quite a sad movie, so if you are looking for a new movie to watch, prepare a box of tissues beside you for some tears.

Although 'Marley And Me', is a sad movie, I did love what they said at the end...

A dog has no use for fancy cars, or big homes or designer clothes...
A waterlogged stick will do just fine.
A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor...
clever or dull, smart or dumb.
Give 'em your heart and he'll give you his.

♥ My Cupcake Recipe

So as of late I have been printing my cupcake recipe on the back of all of my invoices. I think it ads an extra special feeling to each order. But seeing as the recipe is so delicious, I thought I would share it with all of my blog followers!

Cupcakes!

Ingredients
• 2 cups all purpose flour
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 3 teaspoons baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 4 egg whites from large eggs
• 1/2 cup shortening
• 1 cup milk
• 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Vanilla Cupcake Recipe Directions
Preheat oven to 150 degrees.
Line cupcake pans with paper liners of your choice (make them cute!)

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, shortening, milk and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Mix on a low speed for 2 minutes. Scrape bowl. Add egg whites and mix at a high speed until fluffy and smooth, approximately for a further 2 minutes.

Fill liners 1/2 to 2/3 full of batter. Do not overfill. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.
Allow cupcakes to rest for 10 minutes, and then remove them from their pans and place on a wire rack to cool completely.

Frost and decorate your vanilla cupcakes as desired.

Don’t forget to lick the bowl!

♥ Do You Live Within Your Means?

The other day I found an inspiring blog post called "Living Within Your Means," by With2ns Designs.

Quite often I struggle with the fact that others would rather have it all than live within their means.

I hate the pretty picture they paint as if everything is easy go easy come. Making us hard workers look as if we are un-achievers.

I love how she quotes in her post - "This is not about using money to stay alive but using money you don’t have
to impress people you don’t like.

And in all honestly, I would rather satisfaction, knowing I worked hard in life, living within my means, than to have
had everything.

Deep down, I think we all think money could make us so much happier, but would it?

I think we all know that comparing ourselves with others and their valuables we will never be happy. It's better to lead your own path and say, I did it...my...way!

When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others.

Every now and then a jewelry seller will really grab my attention, with their use of materials, colors and technique. Their jewelry just screams out me and what I like to wear.

A beautiful collection of jewellery created by Thumble on Etsy, are crafted with new Czech glass beads to vintage brass charms and sterling silver findings. I also love the way she makes her photographs her branding. Her store certainly stands out from the crowd.

Maybe More Than I Can Chew...

So I have been a little distracted and not updating my blog as often as I would like...

The last two months has consisted of job interviews. Not in this life time would I ever give my bead store away, but as it only pays a minimum wage, I decided that I also wanted a casual position in a shop front. Not only for the money, but so I am mixing with people to help my anxiety levels.

After a small amount of applying for jobs I am now very fortunate to be working at Woolworths Liquor.

This month I have also been busy listing some new beads from one of my more expensive suppliers. I just can’t help myself, I love buying new lines of beads just to keep the business of selling interesting.

So let’s see how I go with the challenge of working two jobs!

It's a lot easier to look glamorous on the net than it is in real life.

So, one of my favourite reads is an Australian small business magazine called 'NETT.'
One article in particular hit close to home this month, with the article beginning like this...

'My eyes ache. My teeth ache. My feet ache. My arms ache. My hair is stuck together with a big fat glob of paint. Or is that fondant icing? Either way it will have to be cut out. My head aches.'

The author mentions, how often boutiques or brick and mortar shops appear so glamorous in movie scenes. All the hard work, wait what hard work? The shops have the perfect paint work, the perfect little studio or office without a care in the world. They have an endless amount of customers and cash that is flowing out of their cash register. You immediately want to start a business or your own...

There is much more to a business which some of us fail to understand. There is the sweat and tears behind what looks like the perfect business. Not to mention the cost. So many people see a business and immediately think the owners are living in a white house a-like set-up. The author also mentions once again... 'Did I mention my head aches?'

While the internet is great for so many things, it is also very fake. Not good for my anxiety. A world where everything is perceived as being perfect. When you are browsing around the internet, you don't normally assume a business is from a home studio or office...

But that is the greatest thing about the internet!

No one needs to know you work in your pajamas or you went to visit IKEA for the day...

In a shop front we and more likely to have a higher standard of professionalism. We have to put on a face and an outfit for the day. It's another world of 'reality.'

That being said, having an online business doesn't mean it's less work than a shop front. Or there is less cost involved. Having a website is just an illusion of what appears to be a perfect world.

And to sum up small online business’s the author in this magazine states, 'The internet maybe fake but the people, customers and the business owners who have made our internet illusion happen are very, very real.'

I just adore these vintage Cabochons! I had been looking around to purchase these for sometime and I finally found a supplier that holds them.

Lucite (also known as acrylic) Dahlia/rose vintage cabochons are now in my store in three beautiful color combinations, ‘Salmon, Ivory and Pink.’ Each cab is complete with intricate petal detail.

The sky is the limit when designing jewelry with these. They are so inspiring.
Glue them onto ring blanks, ear post, or bobby pins. I have even seen people adorn them onto lockets.

As you maybe aware already, I have two bunnies, Sari and Bruno (sadly Zoe passed in '07' hence the business name Zoe&Bruno.)

I love bunnies, they have a real caring nature, and I love this photograph I found on Etsy!

The photo is part of the 'World Peace Prayers Team.' Each time a 'Pay It Forward' is purchased, the team members say a small pray for world peace.

After a number of people asking me whether I had a facility where I offered beads in Australian prices, I decided to create a website with Big Cartel.
Not only can my Australian customers now purchase in AUD, my bead prices will only fluctuate at the time I purchase them, not with the forever changing dollar. Meaning you can also save a little! =)

♥ Pre-Packaging My Lastest (Largest) Bead Order

Pre-packaging beads is always a long and fairly daunting task...

This time around I had to single handily pack 44 lots of beads into tiny packs of 12, 20 and 30 lots of beads etc...

As the multi-coloured beads were a popular hit (which some unfortunately won’t be back in stock,) I have decided to start creating my own color combinations.

I still won’t have the beads listed for a short time... I am planning on photographing them all and then hopefully listing them on Etsy all at once. But when I do, one of my fist mixes will consist of rosebuds in a ‘transparent champagne, blue, rosaline and a beautiful amethyst,’ all with a luxurious luster finish. I'm hoping to have them listed around the middle of November.

Below, I have a photograph of the combination I just mentioned, preparing to pre-package them. =)

For a while now, I have heard a lot of Etsy sellers mention Google Base. I must admit, I had refused to take the time to do some research, or even begin to learn what Google Base may offer, until today...

Google Base is a place where you can easily submit all types of online and offline content, which we'll make searchable on Google (if your content isn't online yet, we'll put it there). You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they do related searches. In fact, based on your items' relevance, users may find them in their results for searches on Google Product Search and even our main Google web search.

If you already have a Gmail account there is no need for you to sign up. Simply click on the link below and sign in with your preferred email account;

When submitting your listings to Google Base, you can add them manually although I prefer to use the scheduler which will update your shop content automatically.

Below is a helpful step by step tutorial created by http://GoToSupplies.Etsy.com showing you how set up your account to scheduling your listings using the RSS feeds from your shop.

This may all seem very complicated, although I can assure you if you follow this tutorial, you will have Google base set up in no time. You will be able to see your listings 'Impressions' - The total number of times your item has appeared in search results since it was published. 'Clicks' - The total number of times someone has clicked on your item in a list of search results since it was published.

What will I achieve by using Google Base?
Since starting my business, Google has been a virtual marketing too. For example; when I upload photos/listings to Flickr/Etsy I use every tag I can think of which has relevance to the item I am selling. I have found by doing this, more and more of my photos/Etsy listings are appearing in Googles search.
By using Google Base, Google will automatically submit (providing you follow the blog above and submit your listings correctly,)You should appear in Google's search even more frequently than previously. =)
